About Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is a Hindu temple in Varanasi, India. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a fiery column of light.
The history of the temple dates back to over 2000 years. The temple was built by King Bhoja in 8th century AD. It was destroyed by Mughals in 1555 and was subsequently rebuilt in the 17th century.
There are three main entrances into the temple complex- North, East and South gateways. The Eastern gateway is known as “Dwarakadhwaj”, which means “the gateway of the God“.
This temple is known for its iconic design and architecture. It has a large number of visitors and is also one of the most visited temples in India.
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the most significant place of Hindu worship in Varanasi and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is situated on the banks of the Ganges and has gained tremendous significance as a center for Hindu pilgrimage. The temple was constructed by King Arka in 490 AD. There are two shrines within the temple complex, one for Shiva’s consort Goddess Parvati, wife Goddess Uma or Kali, and another for Lord Ganesha.
During the night time hours, we cannot enter the temple premises at all times of day because it will be closed for worshipers.
Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple History
- Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple has been destroyed and rebuilt many times in history. The last building was demolished by Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal emperor, who built the Gyanwapi Mosque in its place.
- In 1780, Malhar Raos’s daughter-in-law Akhilibai Holkar built the present temple adjacent to the mosque. The well of Jnana Wapi is located north of the main temple, and during the Mughal invasion, Jyotirlinga was hidden in the well to protect it during the invasion.
- It is said that the current building of this temple consists of three domes, two of which are covered with gold provided by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the ruler of Punjab at the time.
- According to the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Trust, the temple was built by Maharani Achiliya Bai Holkar of Indore in 1780, and the nearby building Naubathana was built in 1785 by the then collector Mohd. Ibrahim Khan at the request of the Governor.
